How To Roast Coffee Beans At Home

If you love the taste of freshly roasted coffee beans or enjoy roasting coffee at home but need to learn how to choose the right tools and methods, this article will help you.

Different Home Coffee Roasters

Commonly used methods include popcorn machine roasting, stovetop roasting, oven roasting and home coffee roaster roasting.

1. Roasting in a popcorn machine

This is a simple, easy-to-operate roasting method. The machine roasting is fast, but the amount of coffee beans roasted at a time is small.

Roasting process

  1. Preheat the machine first, then pour in the raw coffee beans.
  2. Roast the beans for 5-7 minutes and be ready to stop the roasting process at any time, depending on the level of roasting you want. During this process, you need to keep an eye on the roasting of the coffee beans.

This method is simple and easy to use, but you still need to be aware that a popcorn machine is not a substitute for a coffee roaster. After a few roasts, the durability of the popcorn machine will be drastically reduced. On top of that, coffee beans contain many oils that run out during roasting, and these oils can affect the flavour of the popcorn. This will affect your ability to continue using the machine to make popcorn.

2. Stovetop Roasting Coffee Beans

This is one of the cheapest and most traditional coffee roasting methods. The roasting process is also very simple.

  1. Place a pan on the stovetop and preheat it over medium heat, then add the raw coffee beans to the pan. Quickly start stirring to ensure that the beans are heated evenly.
  2. Roasting coffee beans using the stovetop takes 8-15 minutes, with constant stirring during the process.

This method is more suitable for dark roasts. Roasting light roasts is more difficult and requires experience and proper fire control to do a good job. In addition to this, stovetop roasting produces much smoke, so take good measures to remove the smoke.

3. Roasting in the Oven

To roast coffee beans in the Oven, you need to prepare a perforated roasting pan for air circulation.

  1. Preheat the Oven to 500 degrees.
  2. Spread the raw coffee beans evenly on the roasting pan without overlapping the beans. Then send it to the Oven, and every minute, you need to observe the changes in the coffee beans.

Oven roasting will take longer, and it is challenging to roast the beans evenly.

Coffee Bean Roasting Process

Understanding the changes in the roasting process will help you roast coffee beans.

  1. Yellowing (also known as the drying stage): Raw beans are heated to absorb heat. The water evaporates, and the coffee beans turn yellow in colour.
  2. First Crack: The structure of the coffee bean is destroyed, making a popping sound. The oils will begin to migrate to the surface of the beans. The degree of roasting at this time is light roasting (Light Roast).
  3. Caramelization: Caramelization becomes more obvious, and the aroma and flavour of the coffee become richer. At this point, it reaches medium roasting.
  4. Second Crack: Continued heating; the coffee beans again sound cracked, and the degree of roasting reaches medium-deep or dark roasting.
